Controlled Image 30 August 2013...oil, canvas, 2013

For Zenek…

I often hear the question how long it takes me to finish a painting, and I cannot answer. I usually paint several in the same period, i.e. I have a number of paintings started, to which I tend and, depending of the mood, I reach for one of those. While on holiday in the countryside in August 2013, I decided to try calculating the time devoted to one canvas. On the back of the piece, I wrote CONTROLLED IMAGE, the date and time when I began my game; it was 15.30, the 30th of July – yet I put down 'August' – something went wrong, Grandma has just left Droniki and I could freely occupy the space with my 'studio' (I resolved to record each take in the future). I had not been painting long, half an hour later, the phone rang... it was Agnieszka Graczew informing me about the demise of Zenek Polus... and so the painting stopped being controlled, I desisted... or had no mind to note down the time dedicated to painting... I have also never made another attempt to calculate the time I devote to one painting... what for? … this canvas is a mere sketch... I dedicate it to Zenek: such was conversation with him, always unfinished...
