Jadwiga Sawicka

(b. 1959, lives in Przemyśl) is a graduate of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, a professor at the Faculty of Art at the University of Rzeszów. She is an author of paintings, photographs, objects, installations, and public artworks. The primary material of her art are messages culled from mass media. Sawicka is especially interested in words and phrases devoid of authorship and personal responsibility, as well as standard and collectively reproduced texts. She tracks the techniques of managing attention by broadcasting an excess of superficial information as well as excluding unattractive content. Sawicka processes the informational, commercialized trash through, among other things, the multiplication, enlargement, or fragmentation of messages.

Emotional Messages, 2022, posters

The new work by Jadwiga Sawicka consists in selecting and placing in the urban space anonymous messages about strong emotional states. These are messages coming from a clearly tired, agitated and aching body. The exact causes of these ailments and experiences are unknown. The context added by other texts in Polish, which dominate the urban fabric and public space, adds meaning. The majority of those bombard, pressure, seduce, incite hatred, persuade people to buy, to consume, or to beget children. While searching for a place for her posters in Zielona Góra, we found out that there was almost no space in the city to present content unrelated to advertising, religion, or politics.
