Lada Nakonechna

(b. 1981, lived in Kyiv, currently lives in Leipzig) studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv. Member of artistic and curatorial collectives R.E.P. (Revolutionary Experimental Space), Hudrada, and The Method Fund. She creates installations, photographs, and performances, works in public space, edits publications on contemporary art in Ukraine. In her work, Nakonechna criticizes violence and power relations in historical narratives, contemporary visual culture, and politics. Her practices are aimed at supporting social awareness growth processes.

The series of Flags began with the artist finding a suitable stone in a historical place. Then she made a plaster cast of it, so that it gave the impression of a listed museum memorial. Stone casts were placed in display cases with the colours of the flags of different countries (in this edition: Ukraine, Germany, Russia, Poland). With this gesture, the artist indicates the randomness and authoritative nature of assigning nationality to parts of the Earth. She also reminds that one of the functions of museums is to organize the diversity of manifestations of life and matter for the purposes of different ideologies.
